2025 Navigating the Intersection of Domestic Violence and Cancer: Comprehensive Support Strategies for Oncology Social Work Practice
Tuesday, June 24, 2025 1:00 - 2:30 PM Eastern Time
Intimate partner violence (IPV) poses significant risks to oncology patients, who face additional vulnerabilities due to their diagnosis and treatment complexities. In a study by Mejri et al. (2023), IPV among oncology patients was examined, revealing common forms of abuse, including restrictive control over food and clothing (21%), psychological violence (20%), non-consensual sharing of health information (17%), and social isolation through limited visits with loved ones (9.2%).
This presentation addresses IPV within oncology care, emphasizing trauma-informed care, screening practices, and supportive interventions. It highlights the importance of risk assessments, safety planning, and collaborative approaches involving social workers, mental health professionals, and community resources. Additionally, it covers barriers such as fear, isolation, and financial dependency, with strategies to empower patients through education, counseling, and advocacy. Aiming to foster a multidisciplinary approach, the presentation equips healthcare professionals with tools to provide compassionate, comprehensive care tailored to the needs of IPV-affected oncology patients.
